This is an original US 89th Infantry Division shoulder sleeve patch.
Division Origin and Design
First formed in 1917, the 89th Infantry Division earned the nickname the "Rolling W" from its distinctive insignia. The design features a black monogram on an olive green cloth field enclosed by a circular border. When rotated, the central letter flips from a W to an M, referencing the unit's original Midwestern recruits.
Service History and Construction
During World War II, the division fought across Western Europe, crossing the Rhine and liberating the Ohrdruf camp in 1945. Measuring approximately 5.5cm in diameter, this circular badge features dense edge stitching and classic khaki bobbin thread on the reverse side, typical of mid-20th-century US military insignia production.
