Adopted in August 1942 under Army Regulation AR 850-5, the white five-pointed star surrounded by a circular band served as the primary national insignia on Allied armour and transport. The outer ring was added so ground troops and friendly aircraft would not mistake the vehicle for enemy equipment during combat operations across Europe and the Pacific.
