KEY FEATURES
The South African SADF 70 Pattern Small Pack is an original military surplus patrol bag.
Bush War Heritage
Issued to the South African Defence Force during the 1970s and 1980s Border War, this pack replaced the older 61 Pattern gear. Based on the British 58 Pattern, it was adapted for hot climates and field durability. In Distressed condition, these bags show heavy military use, including marks, small repairs, or surface staining while remaining functional.
Practical Layout and Storage
The pack features a 3.5L main compartment measuring 8 x 9 x 3.5 inches, secured with a top flap and webbing strap buckle. Two side pockets measuring 3.5 x 6 x 2 inches provide space for smaller items. Originally designed to hold R1 rifle magazines or field rations, the outer pouches offer quick access on the move.
Carrying System and Materials
Made from heavy cotton canvas with solid metal fittings, this bag handles tough outdoor environments. It includes an adjustable canvas shoulder strap with metal snap clips and rear webbing loops to mount directly onto a belt or load-bearing system. It works well as a small shoulder bag for bushcraft, hiking, or daily use.
Add an original piece of South African military history to your outdoor gear setup.
This item was used by the Other Army during the Late Cold War (1961–1991) and is in Distressed condition. It shows heavier signs of use and fading, but remains fully functional. We recommend washing before use.

Distressed gear is heavily worn surplus packed with genuine field character. While cosmetic wear is substantial, we never sell unusable junk—every item remains fit for its core, primary purpose and is ideal for rugged beat-around use, projects, or workwear.
- Functionality: The main structure and essential closures remain usable, though secondary elements (like a side pocket zip, drawcord toggle, or single snap) may be stiff, stuck, or broken.
- Fabric & Wear: Expect noticeable softening, severe fading, fraying hems, surface staining, or small puncture holes/snags that do not compromise the main build.
- Hardware & Metalwork: Metal snaps, buckles, and eyelets may show paint chipping, heavy patina, surface rust, or tarnishing, but main fastening points stay secure.
- Repairs & Modifications: Often features in-service repairs, patches, visible hand-stitching, missing non-critical buttons, or bold soldier names and stencil markings.
- Storage & Scent: Authentic surplus that has seen real deployment and depot storage—a solid wash and air-out is recommended before everyday wear.
“Bought 2 bags expecting really worn out even torn bags, but just got them and they are in much better shape than i expected them to be. Extremely happy with these.”
