Wartime Service History
Worn by British Army Non-Commissioned Officers between 1920 and 1953, these 3-bar rank chevrons designated the vital role of Sergeant. Sergeants led platoons and sections across every theatre of the Second World War. Sewn directly onto the upper arms of 1937 and 1940 Pattern Battledress blouses, this insignia provided clear command recognition under combat conditions.
Materials and Construction
Each chevron is constructed with a heavy khaki-brown wool backing that matches standard British woollen serge. The three distinct V-shaped stripes feature dense white cotton embroidery stitched in a classic herringbone weave. This coarse, tightly woven build ensured the insignia maintained its shape through hard field wear, harsh weather, and repeated laundering.
Uniform Application
Supplied as an unissued Supergrade matched pair, these patches measure roughly 15 cm by 7.5 cm for period-correct proportion. They are ready to be hand or machine sewn to tunic arms, Greatcoats, or collector display boards. Original surplus stock guarantees genuine period texture and weave that modern synthetic copies fail to replicate.
