Originally issued during the Cold War to enlisted sailors of the West German Federal Navy, this Tellermütze (saucer cap) represents a centuries-old maritime tradition. Worn for formal parades and summer service, its distinctive flat shape has earned it the popular nickname of "Donald Duck" hat. The cap's structured band provides a classic, sharp silhouette during dress duties.
Smart Convertible Construction
This genuine surplus cap features a clever two-piece construction. The removable white top cover, made from a washable cotton blend, easily detaches from the dark blue wool-felt base. For warm climates or formal parades, this allowed sailors to quickly refresh their covers. Inside, a perforated leather sweatband ensures comfortable, breathable wear during active use.
WWII Kriegsmarine Conversions
Because the design is almost identical to the World War II German Navy sailor cap, this piece is highly sought after for historical reenactment. It includes a removable, unattached Bundesmarine cap tally with gold-coloured lettering. The back of the band has the correct tie configuration, making it simple to swap in a wartime reproduction tally for your impression.

This item was used by the German Navy during the Late Cold War (1961–1991) and is in Grade 1 condition. It is in very good condition with plenty of life left. We recommend giving it a wash before wearing.
